Visible Stream

Visible StreamThe results from a two day design charette regarding the city of Duluth, Minnesota. The site was chosen based on previous research done about the needs of the city on the first day of the charette. The other 24 hours were spent producing these materials. This redesign creates a meander of public space throughout the city that breaks the formal grid currently in place. It follows the line of a historic stream that has been tunnelized and culverted. At the highlighted points along the tunnel, the system is broken into to allow the water to act naturally for a certain length of site. This is controlled with terracing, grade change, plantings and specialized materials. Each site that was chosen directs views towards Lake Superior, as with over 800 feet of change through the site, Duluth has a special connection to the lake. The meandering public spaces continue all the way to the lake edge, where a bridging system brings people and water over the railway and down to the Duluth Lake Walk. This system is envisioned over each historic stream in the downtown area (27 miles long) and will create a more perforated and interactive waterfront.
